Like most other Anglican cathedrals and churches, music plays a
crucial and integral part in the life and worship at St Paul's.
Since
part of the Cathedral's mission is to be a place of comfort and
challenge in the heart of the city, we try to reflect this in
our music and liturgy. There are times to be still and reflect,
to hear and sing words of comfort; there are also times to hear
or sing words of excitement and challenge. In all of this we
draw on the best of the church's rich musical heritage of past
centuries, as well as using music and hymns by contemporary
writers.

We
have an Adult Choir who help lead
worship on a Sunday morning and once a month on a Sunday
evening. Music is integral to our Eucharistic Liturgy on a
Sunday morning, as well as to our meditative service of Evening
Prayer in the evening. Music also plays an important part in our
weekday services of Midday Prayer at 1 pm.

The
choir also sings at various diocesan and civic functions
outside the Cathedral, which itself has a fine acoustic and instruments (a 3 manual Hill,
Norman & Beard Organ and Bluthner Grand Piano)
and is regularly used for concerts/ recitals.

We also
offer a number of Choral
Scholarships, especially targeted at young people of secondary
school age. These have kindly been sponsored by Blackadders
solicitors, John Ferguson Denholm Trust, Leng Charitable
Trust, W M Mann
Foundation, Scotbelge Charitable Trust , Harry
Lawson Ltd and
McCorquodale Trust.
Here
is an example of some music by the Choir:
